When you’re aligning your teeth with braces, it’s important to do all you can to prevent the development of gum disease. This is because gum disease is a serious and dangerous dental issue that can destroy your smile and oral health. It’s typically caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar on your teeth and gum line. To help you avoid this disease, our orthodontist, Dr. Myoungsoo Choi, encourages you to do the following things:
-Focus on properly brushing your teeth: It’s best to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. If you can brush after every meal and snack, do it. As you brush, tilt the tool to clean under and around the braces wires and brackets. Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
-Focus on properly flossing your teeth: Although flossing might seem difficult, it’s very important to floss at least once a day. If you can, floss more, like after you brush. To make flossing easier, use flossing tools like a floss threader and waxed floss.
-Visit your dentist every six months: Your routine dental checkups are very important because they remove the bacteria that cause gum disease. So, make sure you attend your checkups every six months so you can prevent this dental problem.
