Genetics and other factors can sometimes combine to cause your child’s oral structure to deviate the alignment of their teeth. This can be especially pronounced in early adolescence in the form of an overbite or underbite

Also known as a malocclusion this orthodontic condition can eventually lead to significant dental problems. Misaligned teeth are increasingly at risk of suffering dental fractures, chipped tooth enamel and chronic problems such as dental attrition.

Fortunately, an experienced orthodontist like Dr. Myoungsoo Choi can use traditional braces to gradually correct your child’s malocclusion. This process starts with him installing small metal brackets, wires and other orthodontic components on their teeth.

If your child feels awkward about the overt appearance of braces hardware when they smile, Dr. Myoungsoo Choi might be able to apply a special porcelain glaze when installing the components.

After completing the installation your child will periodically need to return to see Dr. Myoungsoo Choi to have the braces tightened and adjusted. Each of these regularly scheduled sessions will gradually move their teeth closer to their correct alignment.

Once their overbite or underbite has been fully corrected, the orthodontic hardware can be removed. At this point they will need to use a retainer to help ensure your teeth remain in the new position. This phase typically lasts the same amount of time it took to correct their smile.
