If you have braces, then you probably know how important it is to brush your smile and appliance regularly. Brushing can help you maintain clean and pristine teeth, gums and braces and it can also help you prevent dental problems, like cavities, when you align your teeth. Our orthodontist, Dr. Myoungsoo Choi, strongly recommends making brushing a top priority. To help you properly brush, he is happy to share some brushing tips with you. Those tips are:

-Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and interdental brushes to brush. The soft-bristled toothbrush will clean your teeth and appliance and care for the gums. The fluoride toothpaste will strengthen the teeth to help you prevent cavities. And the interdental brushes will help you clean the hard-to-reach areas around your braces.

-Brush your teeth after each time you eat. This can help you maintain clean and pristine teeth, gums and braces and it can help you avoid embarrassing food-filled smile moments. If you can’t brush after each meal, swish your mouth with water.

-Avoid using whitening toothpaste when you brush. This is because the whitening solution will whiten the enamel around the brackets, but not under the brackets. This can give you an unevenly colored smile after you remove your braces.
