Every mouth has a unique set of needs when it comes to braces, and this affects the length of time required to wear an orthodontic appliance. On average, patients wear braces for about 22 months, and when the appliance has been removed, it’s natural to want to show off the results. However, braces are not the end of your treatment since the teeth and periodontal ligaments still have a lot of tension and are not completely settled. We will provide a custom orthodontic retainer to help you maintain the result of your new smile.
Retainers are made from a durable material such as plastic and attach to a wire that runs along the teeth to prevent them from shifting position. A removable retainer has a wire that crosses the front of the teeth, while the wire of a fixed retainer runs behind your teeth and the retainer itself is cemented to your mouth.
Unlike braces, the length of time for a retainer can last for a few years or as much as a lifetime, and we will determine how long yours needs to be worn. By following the instructions provided by Dr. Myoungsoo Choi when it comes to retainer use, you can prevent any movement in your teeth that shifts them into their form alignment.
If you have a removable retainer, you can keep it in good shape by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a special toothpaste daily, as well as soaking it in a solution at night if it isn’t worn at bedtime. A fixed retainer should be cleaned along with your teeth by brushing twice a day and using an appliance such as a floss threader to easily clean around the appliance at least once a day.
